A 200-level student of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Kwara State, has reportedly committed suicide due to financial hardship.

The deceased, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, was a student of the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences (CIS) and had a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.5 in the Department of Mass Communication before his untimely death.

According to sources within the university community, the tragic incident occurred at his private residence in the Oke-Odo area of Tanke, Ilorin. It was gathered that the student had been struggling financially, especially after losing his father a few years ago. His mother, a retired school teacher, had been solely responsible for his academic expenses since then.

Reports indicate that his financial struggles worsened when he resumed school last year, prompting his colleagues to contribute funds for his tuition and basic needs. However, despite their efforts, he was reportedly overwhelmed by his situation.

Sources revealed that the student consumed a poisonous substance last weekend while his roommate was away attending lectures. Before taking his life, he left a note explaining his inability to cope with his financial difficulties. His roommate reportedly discovered the tragedy upon returning from class and raised the alarm.

A senior administrative officer at UNILORIN, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident to journalists on Tuesday.

“The news came as a shock to us all. This tragic loss has thrown the university community into deep mourning,” the official stated.
