A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has scheduled November 20 for judgment in the terrorism trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Justice James Omotosho fixed the date on Friday after Kanu declined to open his defence within the six days allocated by the court.
Delivering his ruling, Justice Omotosho noted that the court had provided Kanu with ample opportunity to present his case but he chose not to take advantage of it.
“The defendant was given sufficient time to conduct his defence but failed to utilise the opportunity. Having waived his right to defend himself, he cannot later claim to have been denied a fair hearing,” the judge stated.
The ruling paves the way for the long-awaited judgment in the high-profile case, which has drawn widespread national and international attention since Kanu’s re-arrest and continued detention.
