The Emir of Gusau in Zamfara State, His Royal Highness Dr. Ibrahim Bello, has passed away at the age of 71. The traditional ruler died in Abuja on Friday following a prolonged illness.

Dr. Bello ascended the throne on March 16, 2015, succeeding his late father to become the 16th Emir of Gusau. Before his enthronement, he had a distinguished career in public service, rising to the rank of Permanent Secretary in the defunct Sokoto State and later in Zamfara State. He reigned for over a decade.

Confirming the monarch’s passing, Sulaiman Idris, spokesperson to Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, issued a statement expressing the government’s condolences and highlighting the Emir’s impactful leadership.

Governor Lawal described the Emir’s death as a personal loss, emphasizing his influence and support.

“I received with deep sadness the news of the passing of our father, His Royal Highness, Dr. Ibrahim Bello, the Emir of Gusau,” the governor said.

“I express my heartfelt condolences to the Zamfara State Council of Chiefs, the immediate and extended families of the late Emir, the Gusau Emirate, and the entire people of Zamfara State.

“His Highness’s passing is a huge loss for the people of Zamfara, the North, and Nigeria as a whole. He served the people faithfully for 10 years, leading with commitment, dedication, and strong faith.”

Governor Lawal also described the late Emir as a personal confidant whose guidance had been invaluable.

“I have lost a confidant and a father whose wisdom guided me and other leaders in the state,” he added. “May the Almighty Allah (SWT) forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannah.”
