The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, called for collaboration with traditional institutions to help reduce road crashes across the nation.

During a visit to the Olowo of Owo, Oba (Dr) Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III, in Ondo State, Mohammed emphasized the crucial role traditional leaders play in promoting road safety awareness and encouraging adherence to traffic regulations within their communities.

He noted that the authority and respect held by traditional leaders could significantly influence community behavior towards road safety.

Mohammed’s visit, part of the FRSC’s year-end traffic monitoring activities, highlighted Owo’s strategic location as a vital corridor linking the South West to the South South and North Central regions.

He stressed that the Olowo’s leadership could contribute significantly to reducing road crashes in the area.

In a statement by FRSC spokesman, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps Marshal’s outreach to traditional institutions aims to leverage their influence in spreading important safety information, such as the dangers of speeding, vehicle maintenance, and safe road practices.

The statement further explained, “This strategic partnership is part of a broader initiative by the FRSC to reduce road traffic crashes and fatalities.

Engaging traditional rulers is a key element in creating an inclusive approach to road safety, recognizing the importance of community-driven efforts alongside governmental policies and enforcement measures.”

In addition to seeking the involvement of traditional leaders, Mohammed called for the active participation of commuters and transport unions in promoting road safety.

He urged passengers to speak out against reckless driving and advised transport unions to set an example by preventing overloading and alcohol or drug-impaired driving.

The FRSC also reiterated its commitment to ongoing public enlightenment campaigns, road safety research, and initiatives aimed at creating a safer motoring environment throughout the country.
