The Federal Government has suspended 13 students following their reported involvement in the assault of a junior student at the Federal Government College (FGC) in Enugu. According to a statement from the Federal Ministry of Education, the students have been placed on a six-week suspension while an investigative committee reviews the incident.

The ministry’s report detailed that the incident occurred on November 7, 2024, when a group of students allegedly assaulted an SS1 day student. The incident gained public attention after a video of the attack circulated widely on social media, prompting immediate action from the ministry.

“In response, the Federal Ministry of Education established a disciplinary committee to investigate the matter. Based on the findings, all 13 students involved have been placed on a six-week suspension pending the report of the investigative committee,” the statement read.

Minister of Education Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment across federal schools. He assured parents and the public that comprehensive measures would be implemented to protect students and restore a secure atmosphere at FGC Enugu.

To aid in the investigation, the ministry has instructed the School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) to collaborate with security agencies, examining any potential affiliations with external groups. Immediate steps have also been taken to strengthen security at the college, including engagement with law enforcement and a review of current safety protocols.

The ministry further announced that counseling and rehabilitation support will be provided to address students’ needs and promote a positive reintegration process.

The minister called on parents, school authorities, and security agencies to work together to foster a safe environment where students can thrive.
