The Federal Government, in collaboration with the Borno State Government, is set to upgrade the General Muhammadu Buhari International Airport to international standards, with full operations slated to commence by January 1, 2025.

A statement issued by Tunde Moshood, the Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, highlighted the minister’s one-day working visit to Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

Accompanied by key aviation agency executives, including FAAN Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku, NAMA’s Engr. Farouk Umar, NCAA representative Capt. Chris Najomo, and NiMet officials, the visit focused on firming up plans for the airport’s upgrade.

Other stakeholders, including representatives from Customs, DSS, Immigration, and NDLEA, were also part of the delegation. Governor Babagana Zulum warmly received the team, expressing gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Keyamo, whose leadership he commended for driving progress in the aviation sector.

The statement read:
“The visit facilitated vital discussions on the forthcoming upgrade of the General Muhammadu Buhari International Airport, a project aimed at enabling the airport to commence full international operations by January 1, 2025. This milestone upgrade is positioned to not only enhance connectivity for the North East Zone but also to strengthen Maiduguri’s role in international air travel and cargo transportation.”

Governor Zulum reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to collaborating with the Federal Government to ensure the project’s timely completion. He noted the transformative potential of the airport for the region, praising its anticipated impact on trade, travel, and economic development.

Addressing stakeholders, Minister Keyamo described the project as a symbol of growth and resilience for the North East Zone. He highlighted the airport’s world-class runway and cutting-edge facilities, positioning it as a regional hub for cargo and international flights.

“The Honourable Minister’s visit reaffirms the Federal Government’s dedication to strengthening Nigeria’s aviation landscape, supporting economic growth, and promoting accessibility for all regions,” the statement added.

This development underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to enhancing aviation infrastructure across Nigeria, fostering regional development, and bolstering national cohesion. The collaboration between the Federal and Borno State governments is expected to unlock new opportunities for international travel and trade, setting a foundation for progress and prosperity in the North East.
