Australian field hockey player Tom Craig has been suspended for 12 months after attempting to purchase cocaine during the Paris Olympics.

The decision was announced by Hockey Australia, the country’s governing body for the sport, on September 9.

Hockey Australia confirmed that Craig’s suspension will be split into two parts: six months will be fully enforced, while the remaining six months will be suspended, contingent on his compliance with conduct and behavioral requirements.

During this time, Craig will be prohibited from participating in any competitions or events sanctioned by Hockey Australia, including the upcoming Hockey One League and FIH Pro League.

Additionally, Craig is required to complete mandatory training and educational programs as part of the disciplinary measures.

Despite the suspension, he will remain eligible for selection in next year’s national team, with Hockey Australia emphasizing the importance of the player’s well-being during this time.

The incident occurred last month when Craig was detained by French police in central Paris for attempting to purchase cocaine.

After being brought before a French judge, he was released with a criminal warning. Following the incident, Craig issued a public apology, taking full responsibility for his actions and expressing regret for the embarrassment caused to his family, teammates, and the Australian Olympic team.

Craig, a veteran of the Australian field hockey team, has represented his country in over 100 matches, including the Tokyo Olympics where the team secured a silver medal.

Australia’s run at the Paris Olympics ended in the quarterfinal stage.

CNN has reached out to Craig for further comment on the decision.
