In a recent post, the Nigerian Presidency likened Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to former U.S. President Donald Trump.

The comparison was made by Temitope Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Bola Tinubu, through a statement on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday.

Ajayi’s remark comes in the wake of a highly anticipated debate between Donald Trump and Democratic candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris, as they compete in the race for the 2024 U.S. presidential election.

The comparison was drawn between Trump and Obi, with Ajayi suggesting that both figures use extreme rhetoric to appeal to their political bases, even when it may paint a negative picture of the countries they aspire to lead.

The U.S. debate between Harris and Trump covered a range of contentious topics, including immigration and abortion rights.

Ajayi pointed out that during the debate, Harris successfully outmaneuvered Trump, taking advantage of his weaknesses.

He claimed that Trump repeatedly fell into traps set by Harris and was fact-checked extensively throughout the debate.

According to reports, Trump’s performance was marred by the repetition of conspiracy theories and numerous false claims, including an unfounded assertion that immigrants were consuming pets in certain U.S. cities.

Despite being corrected by debate moderators, Trump maintained his controversial stance.

As the debate continues to generate reactions in both the U.S. and globally, Ajayi’s comparison of Obi and Trump has sparked conversations in Nigeria, with some drawing parallels between their political tactics and public messaging strategies.
