Russia announced on Friday that it successfully repelled a nighttime attack involving 12 US-made missiles targeting the Crimea bridge, a key structure built on President Vladimir Putin’s orders following Moscow’s annexation of the peninsula.
“Air defenses were deployed last night to intercept a coordinated strike by 12 ATACMS missiles, all of which were destroyed,” the Russian defense ministry stated.
The bridge, inaugurated by Putin in 2018, connects Kerch in Crimea with southern Russia’s Krasnodar region.
Since Moscow’s military offensive began in February 2022, Kyiv has repeatedly targeted the Kerch Bridge.
Additionally, Russia’s defense ministry reported earlier on Friday that helicopters had neutralized five naval drones in the Black Sea en route to Crimea.
In June, the Kremlin had warned the United States of potential “consequences” and summoned its ambassador after a Ukrainian missile strike, reportedly involving US-made equipment, killed four people in Sevastopol, Crimea.
