The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has declared its full support for the bill seeking to create reserved seats for women in the nation’s legislature.
In a communiqué issued after their meeting in the early hours of Friday, the governors urged members to actively lobby federal and state lawmakers to ensure the passage of the proposed constitutional amendment aimed at enhancing women’s political representation.
The bill, which is expected to be voted on by the National Assembly, seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to create special constituencies exclusively contested by women in both the National and State Assemblies. The proposal is designed as a temporary measure to boost women’s participation in governance and leadership positions.
The governors also commended the Federal Government’s fiscal and monetary policies, particularly those implemented by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), noting that such initiatives were helping to stabilize the economy.
“The forum commends the Federal Government’s fiscal policies, especially those driven by the Central Bank of Nigeria, aimed at stabilizing the nation’s economy,” the statement read.
They further pledged to continue collaborating with federal economic authorities to consolidate the gains of current reforms.
In addition, the NGF reaffirmed its commitment to addressing Nigeria’s security challenges, promising closer cooperation with the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies to tackle emerging threats and strengthen national security.
“Governors reiterated their dedication to tackling Nigeria’s growing security challenges and pledged to work closely with the DSS to address emerging threats,” the statement added.
