Electricity supply has been disrupted in several parts of Abuja, including Maitama, Wuse, Garki, and Asokoro, following an attack on critical power infrastructure by vandals.

According to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the incident occurred early Friday morning, targeting a 132kv transmission line and underground cable that supply power to the Central Area transmission substation in Katampe, Abuja.

In a statement signed by Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, the attack resulted in the loss of 40 meters of 1x500mm XLPE conductor from two 132kv transmission lines. This has left eight distribution feeders feeding the Central Area non-functional, impacting over 60 percent of power supply to the city.

“The vandalism of this critical transmission infrastructure is suspected to have been carried out by unknown persons around the Menillum Park axis of Abuja,” Mbah said.

Efforts are underway to restore power as TCN has mobilized a team of engineers to repair the damaged cables. “Our engineers are on-site to ensure the quick restoration of electricity to the affected areas,” the statement read.

Mbah lamented the persistent vandalism of power infrastructure across the country and appealed to residents to remain patient while repairs are being carried out.

The affected areas include Maitama, Wuse, Jabi, Lifecamp, Asokoro, Utako, Mabushi, and parts of the Presidential Villa.

“TCN enjoins all Nigerians to be vigilant and help protect our transmission equipment,” Mbah added, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts to safeguard critical infrastructure.

Residents in the affected areas are urged to cooperate with authorities as TCN works to restore normal power supply.
