Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has shed light on his recent transfer to Saudi Pro League club Al-Kholood from Greek champions PAOK. The move, which raised eyebrows due to his strong form following his performances at AFCON 2023, was driven by both financial and personal considerations.

Speaking on the Counter Attack Podcast, Troost-Ekong explained that the lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia was simply too attractive to refuse, particularly at this stage in his career.

“I received an offer I couldn’t turn down. I’m 31 now, and I have to think about the bigger picture,” he stated.

The former Watford defender also highlighted the growing competitiveness of the Saudi Pro League, noting the influx of world-class talent such as Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante, and Fabinho.

“The Saudi Premier League is competitive. You can see the level of players there… players at the world-class level,” he remarked.

Troost-Ekong emphasized that securing his future and providing for his family played a crucial role in his decision to join Al-Kholood.

“Everyone talks about the opportunity to guarantee your future. I had to think about my family and kids,” he added.

Since joining Al-Kholood, Troost-Ekong has featured in two matches, both resulting in defeats, but he remains optimistic ahead of their upcoming home fixture against Al Orubah.
