Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have thwarted planned bandit attacks on communities in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State, recovering weapons and other materials in the process.

The operations, conducted between September 26 and 28, 2025, also bolstered residents’ confidence in security agencies, according to OPWS authorities.

On September 26, troops stationed at Abaji received intelligence about bandits sighted in Agurugu village. Acting on the tip-off, the soldiers intercepted the criminals at Sheekan village, forcing them to flee. A search of the area led to the recovery of an automatic pistol, live rounds of ammunition, AK-47 magazines, and 29 mobile phones abandoned by the fleeing suspects.

Two days later, on September 28, troops at Gbise launched a patrol towards Igyudu village after reports of bandit activity. The criminals again fled on sighting the advancing soldiers. Security forces recovered a single-barrel gun, ammunition, AK-47 and G3 magazines, a hand grenade, a tear gas canister, medical kits, and a mobile phone.

Force Commander of OPWS, Major General Moses Gara, commended the troops for their swift response and professionalism, stressing that the recent successes highlight the effectiveness of ongoing security strategies.

“We remain committed to restoring lasting peace in Benue and neighbouring states. Our troops have shown resilience and determination, and we will not relent until these areas are completely secured,” he said.

Gara assured residents of Katsina-Ala and adjoining communities of continued protection, urging them to provide credible and timely intelligence to aid military operations.
