The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has announced that Sunday, March 30, 2025, marks the first day of Shawwal 1446AH and Eid-el-Fitr in Nigeria.

As the President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), the Sultan declared the date following reports from the National Moon Sighting Committees confirming the sighting of the new crescent in multiple locations across the country.

He extended his felicitations to the Nigerian Muslim community, praying for Allah’s continued guidance and blessings.

He urged Muslims to uphold the values and lessons learned during Ramadan and to continue praying for peace, progress, and national development.

Eid-el-Fitr, which signifies the end of Ramadan, is determined by the lunar calendar and the sighting of the crescent moon. The United Arab Emirates and Qatar have also declared Sunday as the first day of the holiday.

Throughout Ramadan, Muslims observe daily fasting from dawn to dusk, breaking their fast in the evening with family and friends. Fasting remains a central practice in Saudi Arabia, home to Islam’s two holiest sites, the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina.
