The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the arrest and detention of a police inspector from its Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad, implicated in the alleged murder of Okezie Mba, a well-known traditional Ogene musician popularly called Igbo-Jah.

In a statement released on Saturday morning, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the Command’s spokesperson, reported that the incident took place on Friday, October 25, 2024, around 8:10 p.m. at the Tactical Squad’s Headquarters.

The shooting occurred as the musician was leaving the premises following a friendly visit.

While the motive behind the police officer’s actions remains unclear, Enugu State Commissioner of Police Kanayo Uzuegbu has directed a thorough investigation.

Ndukwe stated, “A male Police Inspector from the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad of the Enugu State Police Command has been arrested and detained for the alleged murder of Okezie Chikezie Mba, popularly known as Igbo-Jah.

The incident occurred as the musician was departing the squad’s headquarters, at which point the officer fired his rifle, fatally wounding him. He was promptly taken to the hospital but was pronounced dead by the attending doctor.”

The Commissioner of Police has assigned the Deputy Commissioner of Police from the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to oversee a comprehensive investigation and ensure swift disciplinary action against the officer.

“The Commissioner of Police deeply sympathises with the victim’s family, friends, and associates, condemning the tragic event as unacceptable,” the statement added. “He assures that the responsible officer, and any other party involved, will face appropriate sanctions under the law.”

The CP urged all those connected to the victim to remain calm and cooperate fully with the investigation to ensure justice is served.
