Barnsley manager Conor Hourihane has confirmed that Nigeria international midfielder Kelechi Nwakali will be allowed to leave the League One club before the close of the summer transfer window.
The 26-year-old has been out of the first-team picture since returning late from holidays in Nigeria, a decision that led to his exclusion from training. His latest disciplinary issue has once again raised questions over his future, echoing his troubled spell at Spanish side Huesca, where he was sacked for similar reasons.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Barnsley’s clash with Peterborough United, Hourihane admitted the club is already working on an exit for the midfielder.
“Obviously there’s a couple of weeks to go in the window. Let’s see where it takes us,” Hourihane said.
Pressed further on whether Nwakali would be allowed to leave, he responded firmly: “Yes, that’s the plan.”
Nwakali, who joined Barnsley last season, still has two years remaining on his contract and made 26 appearances in all competitions during the 2023/24 campaign.
