The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has officially completed the national initiative to link all mobile phone numbers to individuals’ National Identification Numbers (NIN). This marks a significant advancement in the government’s efforts to enhance security and accountability within the telecommunications sector.

Aminu Maida, the executive vice-chairman of the NCC, shared the update during the 2024 Annual Corporate Governance Conference in Lagos. He acknowledged the challenges citizens faced throughout the process, which began following a directive issued in December 2020. The initiative was introduced to address the issue of unregistered SIM cards, requiring telecom companies to ensure all phone numbers are linked to verified NINs.

Despite several delays and extended deadlines, the final compliance date was set for September 14. Maida noted that, as a result, every mobile number in the country is now connected to a verified identity, making it easier to track and hold accountable individuals involved in fraudulent activities.

“Though it was a difficult process for many Nigerians, we must recognize the importance of this achievement. Today, no phone number exists without a verified NIN, ensuring greater transparency and security,” Maida stated.

Looking ahead, the NCC plans to collaborate with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to develop a more secure framework for addressing fraud in mobile financial transactions. Maida stressed the need for stronger measures to safeguard the financial sector from crimes linked to mobile phone numbers, highlighting the importance of continued improvements in mobile security systems.
