Niger North Senator and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Distinguished Senator Abubakar Sani Bello, presented a report on Thursday regarding the screening of Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman, the nominee for Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON). Senator Sani Bello, addressing the Senate, noted that his committee had thoroughly screened the nominee, following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s nomination. The committee report covered Professor Saleh Usman’s qualifications, security clearance, and adherence to legal requirements, emphasizing his extensive expertise in Hajj operations and his readiness to serve in this important role.

During the plenary session, Senator Sani Bello outlined key findings from the screening. The report confirmed that Professor Saleh Usman’s nomination aligns with the NAHCON Act of 2006, substantiating his qualifications, relevant experience, and comprehensive understanding of Hajj administration. The committee received no opposition to the nominee, and Professor Usman had complied with all regulatory and ethical clearances, including his tax obligations and security verifications. His responses during the interview were described as articulate, demonstrating a depth of knowledge and capability suited for the role.

Senators, including Deputy Senate President Sen. Barau Jibrin and Senator Sharafadeen Alli Abiodun, commended Senator Sani Bello and the Foreign Affairs Committee for their diligence in the screening process. Sen. Jibrin particularly praised both the committee and the President for selecting a well-qualified individual, emphasizing that Professor Saleh Usman’s prior experience, including his work in Saudi Arabia, rendered him an ideal candidate for the position. Senator Sharafadeen likewise expressed confidence in the nominee’s ability to fulfill the demands of the office effectively.

Following the presentation and support from fellow senators, Senate President Godswill Akpabio called on Majority Leader Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno to initiate a motion for confirmation. With a unanimous voice vote, the Senate confirmed Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman as the new Chairman of NAHCON, applauding the thoroughness of the selection process and President Tinubu’s choice for the position.
