The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has suspended two pilots from ValueJet Airlines following a serious violation of aviation safety protocols at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the NCAA, announced the suspension Tuesday night via his verified X handle. He confirmed that the incident took place on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at the airport’s Domestic Terminal.
According to Achimugu, preliminary findings revealed that the pilot, Captain Oluranti Ogoyi, initiated departure procedures from the designated bay without obtaining the required pre-departure clearance.
Describing the action as “reckless,” Achimugu stated that it posed a significant risk to ground personnel and other airport users, violating both national and international aviation safety regulations.
In response to the incident, the NCAA has immediately suspended the licences of both Captain Ogoyi and his co-pilot, First Officer Ivan Oloba. The suspension will remain in effect pending the conclusion of a full investigation.
“The Authority views this incident with utmost seriousness,” Achimugu said. “We reaffirm our commitment to enforcing safety standards and protecting the lives of all aviation stakeholders.”
He further assured the public that the NCAA remains resolute in maintaining the highest standards of operational safety within Nigeria’s aviation industry.
