The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has urged Air Tanzania to provide welfare support and refunds for passengers stranded in both Dar es Salaam and Lagos after the airline failed to operate scheduled flights.
The call followed reports by Nigerian travellers stuck in Dar es Salaam — including one passenger who must attend a visa interview on Monday.
Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, issued a statement on his verified X account, referring to Part 19 of the NCAA Regulations 2023, which entitles affected passengers to hotel accommodation, meals, and regular updates during long delays.
He told Air Tanzania: “While the NCAA is available to support you in any way possible, it would be appreciated if you complied with the regulations. We have explained the ramifications of a technical fault to your passengers, and they understand that safety comes first. Kindly treat them with the courtesies they are entitled to.”
The NCAA also pressed Air Tanzania to extend the same care to passengers stranded in Lagos for outbound flights.
Following his initial appeal, Achimugu later confirmed that the airline had arranged for hotel stays and meals for the stranded travellers. “They have been assured by the airline that they would be flown today, even though the airline does not usually operate to Nigeria by weekend,” he wrote. “We will keep monitoring the situation until the passengers arrive safely.”
