The Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Ibaka, Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, has dismantled a smuggling syndicate involved in transporting petroleum products and contraband goods to Cameroon and other countries within the Gulf of Guinea region.

Three suspects were apprehended during the operation, along with a wooden boat carrying 2,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and 1,000 cartons of beer, intended for illegal export to Cameroon.

While handing over the suspects and seized items to officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Akwa Ibom, the Commanding Officer of the FOB, Capt. Uche Aneke, disclosed details of the operation. According to Aneke, the suspects were arrested around 7 p.m. on Wednesday during a routine night patrol in the Mbo River.

“The Navy intercepted a wooden boat laden with about 1,000 cartons of different brands of beer and other goods. Upon thorough search, our gunboat discovered drums of PMS amounting to 2,000 litres, carefully concealed under the cartons with the intention of smuggling into the Republic of Cameroon,” Aneke explained.

The Commanding Officer issued a stern warning to those involved in smuggling or other illegal activities within Nigeria’s waters, urging them to desist or face legal consequences. “Such criminals will be apprehended and duly prosecuted.

Nigeria’s waters and coastal areas are not for illegal activities,” he said, reaffirming the Navy’s commitment to tackling maritime crimes using advanced surveillance and intelligence.

Assistant Superintendent of the Corps, NSCDC, Willie Sunday, received the suspects and seized items, assuring that the Command would investigate further to establish culpability and prosecute those involved.

This latest crackdown highlights the Navy’s ongoing efforts to ensure the security of Nigeria’s waterways and deter illegal activities within its jurisdiction.
