Former Inter Miami CF head coach Javier Mascherano has stepped down from his role, citing personal reasons, shortly after leading the club to its first-ever MLS Cup triumph.
Mascherano, 41, who took charge in 2024, guided the team to a landmark achievement by winning the 2025 MLS Cup, marking a historic milestone in the club’s history.
In a statement confirming his departure, the former Liverpool FC and FC Barcelona midfielder expressed pride in the team’s success and appreciation for his time at the club.
“I will always carry with me the memory of our first star,” he said, adding that he would continue to support the club from afar.
Mascherano previously played alongside current Miami stars Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez during his time at Barcelona. He also managed the Argentina national football team at the 2024 Olympics before taking up the Miami role.
Following his resignation, Guillermo Hoyos, the club’s former sporting director and a previous Barcelona B coach, has been appointed as his immediate successor.
Inter Miami currently sit third in the MLS Eastern Conference after seven matches, following a 2-2 draw against the New York Red Bulls last weekend.
