A commanding officer and six soldiers attached to the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), have been killed following an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion in Monguno, Borno State.

The Nigerian military confirmed on Monday that the fatalities occurred after troops successfully repelled an attack by terrorists at the Charlie 13 location under Sector 3 operations.

According to a statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the incident took place late on April 12, 2026, when troops came under what was described as an isolated assault. The soldiers engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle, forcing them to retreat while maintaining control of the area.

However, shortly after the encounter, tragedy struck when the commanding officer moved toward the frontline to assess the situation. His vehicle reportedly triggered an IED, resulting in his death alongside six other personnel.

“Regrettably, the Commanding Officer, while courageously proceeding to the troops’ location to personally assess the situation, encountered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) which severely affected his vehicle, leading to his death alongside six other gallant personnel,” the military said.

The statement highlighted the officer’s leadership and bravery, noting that his actions reflected the highest traditions of military service.

“His willingness to move towards the troops in the heat of the battle, despite the prevailing danger, stands as a profound testament to his valour, sense of duty, and unwavering commitment to the welfare and operational effectiveness of his men.

“Operation HADIN KAI deeply mourns the loss of this exceptional officer and the other brave personnel who paid the supreme price in service to the nation.

“Their sacrifice will forever remain etched in the memory of the Armed Forces and the grateful nation they served,” the statement added.

Despite the loss, the military confirmed that troops remain in firm control of the location following the attack.
