Manchester United began a new era under interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy with a commanding 5-2 victory over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup. Van Nistelrooy, stepping in after Erik ten Hag’s departure, set high expectations and a clear vision for the squad’s performance at Old Trafford, emphasizing passion, energy, and teamwork.

In preparation for the match, Van Nistelrooy highlighted the emotional toll following ten Hag’s exit, saying, “It was hectic, a day where emotions were going, we had to stabilise and get back to work.” He underscored the importance of honoring the club’s legacy: “What it is about to play at Old Trafford and play in front of the wonderful fans with enthusiasm, lots of possession and attacks—that’s what Man United is about.”

Van Nistelrooy’s goal was to reignite the club’s spirit and reconnect with the fans, urging his players to bring energy and intensity to the pitch. “The most important thing is passion, energy, play together, and get the crowd going and give them a great night of football,” he shared in a Sky Sports interview.

Despite recent challenges, including a disheartening loss to West Ham, Van Nistelrooy remained confident in the squad’s talent and experience. “We have the qualities and experience to do so… we were knocked down but we are up again, fighting, and that’s what United is about,” he stated, affirming his faith in the team’s resilience.

United delivered on his vision, overpowering Leicester with standout performances. Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro each scored twice, while Alejandro Garnacho added another, securing United’s spot in the EFL Cup quarter-finals and demonstrating the players’ ability to rally under new leadership.

Reflecting on the bittersweet transition, Van Nistelrooy expressed his sadness over ten Hag’s departure. “It’s mixed feelings, it’s sad to see Erik go, he was the one that got me here. He really fought and did everything in his possibilities to forward this club,” he remarked, acknowledging the impact of his compatriot.

With Van Nistelrooy at the helm, Manchester United’s emphatic win against Leicester signals a hopeful new chapter, built on teamwork, passion, and a renewed commitment to the club’s storied legacy.
