Liverpool Football Club has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Portuguese forward Diogo Jota, describing it as an “unimaginable loss” following a fatal car crash in Spain.
Jota, 28, and his younger brother, André Silva, 26, were both killed in the accident, which occurred in the province of Zamora, Spain.
In an official statement, Liverpool said: “Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, team-mates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.”
The Portugal international joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and quickly became a fan favourite for his tenacity and clinical finishing.
He was part of the squad that won the Premier League in the 2023–24 season and had earlier played key roles in the Reds’ FA Cup and League Cup triumphs during the 2021–22 campaign.
The football world has been left in shock as tributes continue to pour in for Jota, who was regarded as one of the most hardworking and versatile forwards of his generation.
