Kano, Edo Delay School Resumption Indefinitely Amid Challenges

The Kano State Government has announced an indefinite postponement of the resumption of both primary and secondary schools for the 2024/2025 academic session.

While the specific reasons for the delay were not disclosed, authorities cited “urgent reasons” for the decision.

This follows a similar development in Edo State, where the government also postponed the reopening of schools.

In Edo’s case, the delay was attributed to the rising petrol prices and the resulting financial strain on parents and guardians.

Across most states in Nigeria, schools were scheduled to resume on Monday, September 9.

However, with these postponements, Kano and Edo now stand apart from the general timetable.

In a statement released on Saturday, Balarabe Kiru, Director of Public Enlightenment at the Kano State Ministry of Education, confirmed the decision.

He noted that the Commissioner for Education, Umar Doguwa, would soon announce a new resumption date.

Kiru addressed parents, pupils, and students, informing them that the initial resumption dates of September 8 and 9 had been delayed.

He emphasized that the decision was made to improve the overall learning environment, assuring the public that a new date would be communicated once finalized.

The postponement comes as families in several states face increasing economic challenges, with fuel price hikes adding pressure on household budgets.

Both state governments have expressed their commitment to ensuring a better learning atmosphere when schools eventually reopen.
