Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has officially signed into law the creation of a Ministry for Livestock Development, a move heralded as a pivotal strategy to enhance agricultural productivity, innovation, and economic growth across the state .

According to a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Hamisu Gumel, the governor assented to the legislation on Tuesday, describing the new ministry as “quite an important ministry.” The statement underscored that the initiative is a deliberate response to the considerable potential of the livestock sector in Jigawa, which is home to one of the largest livestock markets in Africa .

Governor Namadi said:

“With our activities in the livestock sector, the establishment of this ministry is a welcome development.”

Simultaneously, the governor also signed the Jigawa Agricultural Transformation Service Law 2025, aimed at establishing an agency to further the state’s agricultural industrialisation agenda. The legislation positions the agency as a potential benchmark for both northern Nigeria and the country at large .

Governor Namadi expressed confidence in the combined impact of these new institutions, stating:

“We are optimistic that it will create more jobs, boost food security, and strengthen Jigawa’s economy.”

He also praised the State Executive Council for its approval of the bill, extending confidence that both the ministry and the new agency will effectively deliver on their mandates .
