The House of Representatives has now convened a national public hearing on constitutional review in the Federal Capital Territory. The hearing is being held at the Transcorp Hilton.
Chaired by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, the review committee includes representatives from all 36 states and the FCT. The group is racing toward its December 2025 deadline to finalize amendments and submit a report to the National Assembly leadership.
More than 87 priority bills are under consideration. These include proposals for state policing, special seats for women, local government autonomy, creation of new states, and devolution of powers. Input from today’s session is expected to inform the House’s debates when it resumes.
The committee has stated its aim is to deliver a constitution that “strengthens Nigeria’s democracy, promotes inclusive governance, enhances security, ensures fiscal responsibility, and aligns with global best practices in constitutional design.”
Key to achieving these goals will be the cooperation of the State Houses of Assembly, whose concurrence is required for any constitutional amendment. The stakeholders present, including various state assembly members and other civic representatives, will help shape the final recommendations.
