Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, formally inaugurated the 17 local government chairmen elected last Saturday, urging them to prioritize the “Abia First” vision and to drive socio-economic transformation within their respective councils. The ceremony took place on Monday, where Governor Otti highlighted the importance of impactful governance at the grassroots level.

The newly sworn-in leaders include Timothy Iheke (Aba North), Anyanwu Obilor (Aba South), Okereke Ezearo (Arochukwu), Uwabunkeonye Bassey (Bende), Dr. Anthony Nwaubani (Ikwuano), Innocent Uruakpa (Isialangwa North), Nnadozie Nwaogwugwu (Isialangwa South), and Chinedu Ekeke (Isukwuato) – all representing the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

Additional council leaders from the Young Progressives Party (YPP) include Chidi Christian Agu (Osisioma) and Ihenacho Chiemela Nwagbara (Ugwunagbo).

On Sunday, the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) issued Certificates of Return to these 17 newly elected leaders, consisting of 15 ZLP and two YPP members.

During his address, Governor Otti emphasized the need for immediate and visible improvements within their communities: “Your task is to solve the basic problems that have bedevilled our people in the various communities for ages. Access to water, basic health and education services, effective maintenance of roads, and quick response to security threats in your local communities should rank very high in your order of priorities.”

He further charged the chairmen to ensure that, within six months, “our people should be able to see the impact of your leadership through measurable improvements in the living conditions of the people, especially women, youths, and the vulnerable in the various localities.”
