First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Pays Glowing Tribute to African Women, Girls on International Day

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has joined millions across the globe in commemorating the International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent, celebrating their courage, resilience, and achievements in the face of historical and systemic challenges.

In a statement issued Friday to mark the occasion, Senator Tinubu hailed African women and girls worldwide for their unwavering contributions to families, communities, and society at large. She reaffirmed pride in their growing influence across various fields, despite enduring adversity.

“Today, I join millions of Nigerians as we commemorate the International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent, a day that honours the strength, resilience, and courage of African women and girls everywhere,” she stated.

Highlighting the global progress of women and girls of African heritage, the First Lady said their accomplishments are particularly noteworthy given the persistent barriers they continue to overcome.

“Across the world, women and girls of African descent continue to excel despite facing historical and systemic barriers,” she noted.

She further commended their daily sacrifices, especially in family life, acknowledging their vital role in preserving African values and identity.

“We use this day to celebrate you as you take care of your families and continue to excel. I say well done. You have all come a long way. We are proud of all your achievements as you keep the African spirit alive,” she declared.

Senator Tinubu concluded with a heartfelt message of solidarity and celebration: “Long live women and girls of African descent.”

The International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent, established by the United Nations in 2021 and observed every July 25, aims to honour the contributions of Black women and girls worldwide while spotlighting the unique challenges they face in the pursuit of equality and justice.
