The Federal Government has warned contractors managing ten federal road projects in Niger State to resume work immediately or risk contract termination. The directive was issued during a high-level meeting chaired by Minister of Works, David Umahi, on November 15, 2024, in Minna, Niger State.

The meeting, attended by Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, Minister of State for Works Bello Muhammad Goronyo, members of the National Assembly, contractors, and other stakeholders, addressed widespread delays and reports of substandard construction despite contractors receiving advance payments.

Expressing dissatisfaction, Umahi criticized the contractors for failing to fulfill their obligations, stating that their inefficiencies have caused significant hardship for road users and hampered Niger State’s development. He stressed that the administration of President Bola Tinubu prioritizes speed, quality, and value for money in all infrastructure projects.

“There will be consequences for contractors who collect money for projects but delay or deliver substandard work,” Umahi warned, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to accountability and efficiency.

Governor Bago echoed these concerns, highlighting how delays in road construction have exacerbated Niger State’s socio-economic and security challenges. He specifically called for the revocation of contracts awarded to Salini Nigeria Ltd., citing the company’s poor performance and failure to deliver projects initiated in 2010.

In a statement released by Uchenna Orji, Special Adviser on Media to the Minister, the communique issued at the end of the meeting confirmed the resolution to terminate Salini Nigeria Ltd.’s contracts and re-award them through due process.

The Federal Government’s stance reflects its renewed focus on ensuring contractors meet their commitments to accelerate development and alleviate the challenges faced by communities in Niger State.
