Abbas Haruna, a Nigerian Navy Seaman allegedly detained for nearly six years on the orders of a senior officer, has been released. His wife, Hussaina Iliya, who had previously called attention to his plight, confirmed the news during an appearance on the popular Abuja-based radio program Brekete Family.

Iliya had earlier accused Brig. Gen. A.S. Adamu of ordering her husband’s detention and torture, alleging that Haruna had been unjustly held since 2018. Her emotional plea gained widespread attention, leading to the involvement of high-ranking officials, including Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Christopher Musa and Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle, who ordered an investigation into the matter.

Days after the allegations surfaced, the Defence Headquarters responded, denying Haruna’s arrest. However, a video later emerged showing Haruna resisting efforts to disarm him by military personnel, during which shots were fired.

On Friday, Iliya and her husband appeared on Brekete Family to announce his release. According to Iliya, Haruna has not only been released but also discharged from the military.

In an emotional recount of their ordeal, Iliya shared, “I will be with him no matter the situation. They have discharged him. He was ejected from the barracks. I love my husband, I love him,” she said tearfully.

Haruna’s case has drawn significant public interest, shedding light on concerns about military justice and accountability in Nigeria.
