The former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has rejected his impeachment, describing it as unconstitutional and dismissing allegations of corruption leveled against him.
Obasa, who addressed supporters on Saturday at the Speaker’s Lodge in Ikeja, Lagos, emphasized the need for adherence to constitutional processes in his removal. He was impeached on January 13 by a majority of the Assembly over alleged misconduct and financial impropriety.
“I thank you for your support and dedication,” Obasa said. “I will take this advantage to debunk the allegations that were circulated about me. Is it possible to construct an ordinary gate with N16 billion? It is not the wall of Jericho or the U.S.-Mexico border wall. How can they claim we bought one Hilux bus for N1 billion each, purchasing 40 pieces for N40 billion?”
Obasa, who was in the United States during the impeachment, also alleged police intimidation during the process. He accused Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Isola Olawale, of deploying over 200 officers to his Agege residence, effectively placing his family under house arrest.
“My children did not sleep in this house on that day because they were locked out, and my wife was kept inside — house arrest,” he stated.
Obasa maintained that his removal violated constitutional procedures, claiming, “There is no impeachment in the Assembly. You can only remove the speaker, but it must follow constitutional rules. I’m not afraid of being removed, but it must be done properly.”
Despite the allegations and his removal, Obasa declared his intention.
