The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 election, to join forces with Peter Obi in the opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 polls.
Responding to Baba-Ahmed’s recent criticism of the coalition, the ADC described his remarks as “personal opinions” that did not represent the position of the party.
In a statement signed by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Jackie Wayas, the ADC reaffirmed its commitment to uniting opposition forces against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Baba-Ahmed had, during a television interview on Friday, accused the coalition of “deceiving Nigerians” and claimed it lacked the capacity to rescue the nation. He also disclosed his intention to contest alongside Obi in 2027.
But the ADC, in a swift response, stressed that the coalition remained a broad-based effort to present a credible alternative to President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
According to the statement, the coalition emerged after extensive consultations and currently includes key political leaders such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-governor Nasir El-Rufai, Senator David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, Rotimi Amaechi, and Obi.
The party further recalled that Obi had publicly endorsed the ADC as the platform for 2027, while also emphasising that no single group could deliver change alone.
“Obi has stressed the coalition’s commitment to competent and compassionate leadership that prioritises the welfare of Nigerians, insisting that a new Nigeria is possible,” the statement read.
Clarifying its stance on Baba-Ahmed’s remarks, Wayas said: “Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed’s assertions are his personal opinions and do not reflect the position of the ADC or its coalition partners.”
The party, however, extended an olive branch to him, acknowledging his reputation and urging him to join the movement. “Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed is a respected voice who has always stood for integrity and justice.
Since the coalition is a collective effort that requires the strength and skills of all patriots, we sincerely hope he comes on board to contribute to this shared vision for a better Nigeria,” Wayas added.
Reiterating its mission to unite the opposition around a transformative agenda, the ADC appealed to Nigerians to back the coalition.
“Nigerians deserve clarity and unity in the pursuit of a better future. Let us rally behind the ADC and rescue Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
