Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi congratulated 17-year-old Nigerian-American motorsport prodigy Ugo Orlandi on his groundbreaking victory at the 71st Macau Grand Prix.

Orlandi’s win, achieved on Sunday, November 17, 2024, secured him the FIA Formula Regional (FR) World Cup title, marking him as the first American driver in over 40 years to claim the prestigious championship.

Racing for R-ace GP, Orlandi dominated the event from start to finish, beating Olivier Goethe of MP Motorsport and Noel León of KCMG IXO by Pinnacle Motorsport, who finished second and third, respectively.

In a statement shared via X on Monday, Obi lauded Orlandi’s remarkable achievement, emphasizing the young driver’s exceptional talent and perseverance.

“Ugo’s outstanding victory stands as a testament to his immense talent, hard work, and consistent dedication qualities that our youth today can demonstrate when given the right support and guidance,” Obi remarked.

Orlandi’s diverse background further underscores his inspirational journey.

The teenager is the son of Nigerian supermodel Oluchi Onweagba Orlandi and Italian former fashion designer Luca Orlandi, blending cultural heritage with global aspirations.

“His success serves as an inspiration to young Nigerians everywhere, illustrating the boundless potential that can be realized when passion is paired with opportunity,” Obi added.

The former presidential candidate also extended his appreciation to McLaren for their pivotal role in nurturing Orlandi’s career, calling their support a blueprint for developing young talent.

“I must also commend McLaren for their foresight in recognising Ugo’s potential and for their ongoing commitment to developing young talent.

Their support underscores the critical role of nurturing ambition and investing in the future,” he stated.

Obi concluded by celebrating Orlandi’s influence on the sport and beyond, highlighting his ability to inspire millions globally.

“Ugo, beyond making history, you have inspired millions.

I look forward to witnessing your continued rise as you push the boundaries of what’s possible in motorsport.

Congratulations once more, Ugo,” he said.

Orlandi’s historic victory cements his status as a rising star in motorsport, embodying the power of passion, perseverance, and opportunity.
