Nigerian champions Edo Queens are gearing up to make history as they enter the CAF Women’s Champions League, with their sights set on becoming the first Nigerian club to win the prestigious tournament. They face Central Bank of Ethiopia in their opening match on Sunday.
The Edo Queens are guaranteed a participation fee of $150,000 (over 250 million naira) and could earn even more as they progress. The tournament’s winner will receive $600,000 (close to half a billion naira), with additional prizes of $400,000 for the runners-up and $35,000 for third place, among other incentives.
Head coach Moses Aduku is optimistic about his team’s chances, emphasizing a focused, game-by-game approach. “I tell the players to treat every game as if it’s the only one. The team is in good shape, and everyone is ready to go,” Aduku shared.
He also highlighted the ambition to replicate the success of Nigeria’s national team, the Super Falcons, in African women’s football. “The Falcons are nine-time champions in Africa, and we want to bring that same legacy to the club level. Nigeria hasn’t won the CAF Women’s Champions League yet—that’s why we’re here,” he said.
Aduku acknowledged the challenges they may face but remains confident. “We’re going in with everything. We know our opponents, and our style of play will be exciting to watch,” he added.
Team captain Efemweokiekie Osakpolor echoed the team’s motivation, drawing inspiration from their journey to the Champions League. Edo Queens earned their spot in the finals in Morocco by winning the Nigeria Women’s Champions League and the WAFU B qualifiers.
Reflecting on their tough road to the top, Osakpolor said, “The first round of the league in Nigeria was challenging, but we are well-prepared and not intimidated by any team.”
Edo Queens’ journey to glory begins Sunday against Central Bank of Ethiopia.
