Edo Governor-elect Monday Okpebholo has accused outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki of attempting to obstruct a smooth transfer of power ahead of his upcoming swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday. Okpebholo’s statement, issued through his media aide Godspower Inegbe on Sunday, was a response to Obaseki’s remarks on Friday, where the outgoing governor claimed he had not been invited to the ceremony.

In his earlier comments, Obaseki alleged that Okpebholo and his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), were organizing the inauguration without consulting the state government, labeling the action “lawless.”

Okpebholo responded sharply, condemning Obaseki’s remarks as “reckless” and questioning the governor’s commitment to a peaceful transition. He criticized Obaseki for failing to call or congratulate him since the election concluded, implying a lack of cooperation from the outgoing administration.

The statement read: “Obaseki’s claim that he was not invited to the inauguration is laughable and absurd. Since Senator Okpebholo was declared the winner, Obaseki has done everything possible to frustrate a peaceful transfer of power.”

Okpebholo continued, “As a sitting governor, Obaseki should tell the people of Edo State if he has ever invited the governor-elect to Government House for a meeting or a tour. Has he even called to congratulate Senator Okpebholo on his victory?”

He urged Edo residents to ignore Obaseki’s “reckless statements” and rally behind the incoming administration to “address the many issues left by the current government.” He further noted that Obaseki had not been seen in Government House in the 72 hours leading up to his official exit, questioning his commitment to the state’s stability during the transition.
