The Federal Capital Territory Police Command confirmed that House of Representatives member Alex Ikwechegh is currently being interrogated at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters.
Ikwechegh, who represents the Aba North & South Federal Constituency, is accused of assaulting e-hailing driver Stephen Abuwatseya.
According to a widely circulated video, the lawmaker allegedly slapped the driver when he requested the delivery fee, questioning whether the driver knew who he was speaking to.
Ikwechegh reportedly threatened to make Abuwatseya disappear without facing any repercussions.
In a statement released on Monday, police spokesperson Josephine Adeh indicated that an investigation has been initiated.
Preliminary inquiries suggest that the incident arose when Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Ikwechegh, leading to a dispute over the delivery method.
“The incident occurred on October 27, 2024, at a residence on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja,” Adeh stated.
She added, “The FCT Police Command has received a report regarding an incident involving a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya, and Hon. Alexander Ikwegh.
Preliminary investigations indicate that during an altercation, Mr. Abuwatseya was reportedly physically assaulted.”
The police expressed serious concern over Ikwechegh’s apparent disregard for law enforcement.
Adeh criticized the lawmaker for undermining the authority of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, by challenging the driver to contact him after the alleged assault.
“After allegedly slapping the victim, he reportedly remarked with contempt, ‘You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,’” she noted.
Ikwechegh remains at the Maitama Police Station for questioning, and Commissioner of Police Olatunji Disu has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
“The Command is committed to conducting an impartial investigation and ensuring justice in all cases.
Upon completion of the investigation, appropriate legal action will be taken,” Adeh assured.
