President Bola Tinubu has commended security agencies for the successful rescue of 308 Nigerians abducted in separate attacks in Kwara and Niger states, describing the operation as a major breakthrough in the country’s fight against insecurity.
Of those rescued, 163 victims were abducted from Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, while the remaining 145 were kidnapped in Niger State.
The victims were rescued from the Kainji Lake National Park forest in New Bussa Local Government Area of Niger State following a coordinated, intelligence-led operation by the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), with support from the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force.
According to the Presidency, the operation was the largest single-day rescue mission ever carried out by the joint security team.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised the leadership and personnel of the participating security agencies for their courage, professionalism and effective inter-agency collaboration.
“The successful execution of this intelligence-led operation demonstrates the growing efficiency and collaboration among our security services.
“I commend our gallant men and women in uniform for their bravery and unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigerian lives,” the President said.
The statement added that the rescued victims are currently receiving first aid and other essential medical treatment at a medical facility within Wawa Cantonment.
Following medical evaluation, they will be handed over to their respective state governments for rehabilitation, comprehensive care and reunification with their families.
While celebrating the successful rescue, Tinubu directed security agencies and other relevant stakeholders to strengthen measures aimed at preventing similar incidents across the country.
He ordered the immediate enhancement of early warning systems, improved community-based intelligence gathering and stronger rapid response capabilities to better protect vulnerable communities.
The President also reassured Nigerians of his administration’s commitment to defeating criminal elements and restoring lasting peace across the country.
Tinubu reaffirmed that his government remains resolute in its determination to eliminate security threats, protect lives and property, and ensure the safety of all Nigerians.
