A major wildfire in eastern England has triggered evacuations and road closures, although authorities have assured the public that the blaze poses no threat to nearby nuclear facilities.

The fire, which erupted at Dunwich Heath on England’s east coast, has been described by officials as one of the most significant wildfire incidents in Suffolk’s history. Located several miles north of the Sizewell nuclear sites, the blaze is not expected to spread towards the facilities.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said it had intensified emergency operations to contain the wildfire, which has affected nearby communities and forced precautionary evacuations as firefighters battle to bring the situation under control.

Authorities said prevailing wind conditions and the surrounding landscape are expected to prevent the fire from reaching the Sizewell B nuclear power station or the Sizewell C nuclear plant currently under construction.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service Chief Fire Officer Jon Lacey said the terrain separating the wildfire from the nuclear sites significantly reduces the risk of the blaze spreading to the facilities.

“The terrain and land between us, the fire, and Sizewell B and C means that it’s not a significant fire spread concern,” Lacey told reporters, adding that both sites were being closely monitored in coordination with their operators.

In a statement, Sizewell C said the wildfire posed a low risk to the construction project because of its distance from the site and the presence of surrounding watercourses.

French energy company EDF also confirmed that operations at the Sizewell B nuclear power station remain unaffected, noting that the facility is separated from the fire by a body of water.

Meanwhile, UK Housing Minister Angela Rayner said the government is closely monitoring the incident and stands ready to provide any additional support required as emergency services continue efforts to contain the wildfire.

Firefighters remain at the scene as operations continue to bring the blaze under full control and assess the extent of the damage.
