The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has clarified that any adjustments to the allowance of corps members will be subject to directives from the Federal Government.

This follows the recent approval of a N70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers.

The NYSC’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, reaffirmed this stance, stating that the organization is awaiting further instructions from the Federal Government regarding the matter.

President Bola Tinubu signed the new minimum wage bill into law on July 29, 2024, following extensive discussions with labor unions.

This announcement has sparked widespread speculation regarding potential changes in the corps members’ stipends.

Amidst rumors circulating on social media, some corps members reported receiving notifications suggesting they upgrade their bank accounts to accommodate higher allowances exceeding N50,000.

The alleged message claimed that many accounts opened during orientation camps had limitations on the maximum amount they could receive.

In response, the NYSC swiftly addressed the situation, dismissing the rumors as entirely false.

The management emphasized that no directive had been issued to increase corps members’ pay or to advise them to upgrade their bank accounts.

The NYSC further explained that without an official directive from the government agency responsible for wage adjustments, no changes to the allowances can be made at this time.

Embu reiterated that any increase in corps members’ allowance will only occur once the Federal Government implements the new minimum wage across all sectors.

As it stands, the NYSC remains committed to adhering to government policies, and corps members will only see a potential increase when the Federal Government takes action to align their pay with the new wage structure.
