In a move aimed at promoting rehabilitation and self-reliance among inmates, Malam Muawiyah Yusuf Muye, Media Adviser to Senator Abubakar Sani Bello, has donated vocational equipment to the Agaie Correctional Facility through the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Lapai Chapter.

The donation, comprising two sewing machines, three barbing clippers and three pressing stones, was delivered on Tuesday by the Coordinator of the NYCN Lapai Chapter and Chairman of the Forum of NYCN Coordinators (Zone A), Comrade Aliyu Ndeji, alongside Ibrahim Yusuf Suleiman, Personal Assistant to Malam Muawiyah Muye.

Speaking during the handover, Comrade Ndeji conveyed the donor’s message, stressing that correctional institutions require support beyond government provisions. He noted that inmates should not be neglected, emphasising that incarceration is intended for correction, skill acquisition and reintegration into society, particularly as many inmates are serving sentences for non-violent and misdemeanor-related offences.

“Being imprisoned is not a justification for being forgotten. A correctional facility must correct by equipping inmates with skills that prepare them for reintegration into society,” Comrade Ndeji said.

He added that the donation reflects Malam Muawiyah Muye’s belief in second chances, explaining that the vocational tools would enable inmates to acquire marketable skills such as tailoring, laundry services and barbing, which could help restore self-worth, reduce recidivism and provide a pathway to economic independence after release.

Also speaking, the donor’s personal assistant, Comrade Ibrahim Yusuf Suleiman, extended Malam Muawiyah Muye’s goodwill to the management and inmates of the facility. He assured them that the gesture marked the beginning of sustained engagement, reaffirming the donor’s commitment to community upliftment, youth development and human-centred interventions.

Receiving the items, the Officer in Charge of the Agaie Correctional Facility, ASC Tanko Abdullahi, expressed appreciation to Malam Muawiyah Muye and the NYCN Lapai Chapter led by Comrade Aliyu Ndeji, describing the intervention as timely and impactful.

“It takes exceptionally kind-hearted individuals to remember those behind bars. This gesture will go a long way in improving vocational training within the facility and boosting the morale of the inmates,” ASC Tanko said.

He offered prayers for continued blessings upon the donor, noting that such initiatives significantly enhance rehabilitation efforts and remind inmates that they are not forgotten.

The intervention, observers say, goes beyond material support, reflecting a commitment to inclusive development, compassion-led leadership and the belief that correction is most effective when dignity is restored and hope is preserved.
