FC Barcelona have dismissed speculation linking goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen with a January departure, stressing that the German international remains central to the club’s long-term plans.
Ter Stegen, who has been sidelined due to injury, has served as Barcelona’s first-choice goalkeeper for nearly a decade and is widely regarded as one of the leaders in the dressing room.
Speculation over his future intensified following the signing of Joan García from city rivals Espanyol, a move that raised eyebrows among fans and pundits.
However, Barcelona’s Director, Deco, moved to shut down the rumours. Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, and as shared by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano on X, Deco said:
“There’s no January plan around Ter Stegen exit. If he was fit, he’d probably be playing — he’s our captain.”
He further explained that the García deal was not a replacement strategy but part of a broader vision. “Joan García was about the present and the future. Signing him wasn’t ‘against’ Ter Stegen; it was smart planning,” Deco added.
Since his arrival in 2014, Ter Stegen has been one of Barcelona’s most consistent performers, renowned for his sharp reflexes, composure with the ball at his feet, and commanding presence. His contributions have been pivotal in the club’s transition following the departure of Víctor Valdés.
