The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has cautioned that urging former President Goodluck Jonathan to run again in the 2027 presidential election may lead to political instability.
Speaking during an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television Thursday night, Wike described such calls as “hypocritical,” pointing out that many who now want Jonathan to return were among those who abandoned him during his failed re-election bid in 2015.
“Anybody saying Jonathan should return because he will only do one term is only looking for a crisis,” Wike stated. “These are the same people who frustrated him in 2015.”
He added that the notion of enforcing a “one-term presidency” for candidates from the South is disingenuous and presents a danger to national unity.
Wike’s remarks come amid speculation that Jonathan may contest the 2027 election. Some proponents argue Jonathan’s past incumbency would limit him to a single term, and that his widespread appeal across Nigeria could position him favorably.
