The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to ending the recurring violence and killings in Plateau State.
Ribadu gave the assurance during an operational visit to the headquarters of Operation Safe Haven in Jos, following a series of deadly attacks on communities in Bokkos Local Government Area (LGA). Over 50 lives were lost in the assaults, which also left more than 300 houses burnt by suspected herdsmen.
“We are determined to find a lasting solution to these incessant attacks and killings,” Ribadu stated.
Accompanying the Federal Government’s response, the Plateau State Government, represented by Secretary to the State Government, Samuel Jatau, also visited several of the affected communities. The delegation assessed the scale of destruction and delivered relief materials to victims.
Highlighting the growing insecurity, the District Head of Manguna appealed to authorities for increased deployment of security personnel in the region, citing fears of escalating rural-urban migration due to the violence.
Yohanna Michael, a resident of the Hurti community, recounted the tragic aftermath of the attacks, revealing that over 30 victims were buried in a mass grave. “We are still searching for missing persons,” he added.
The attacks have displaced more than 700 individuals from their ancestral homes, raising urgent calls for government intervention and reinforced security to allow residents to return and resume their farming activities.
In response to the deteriorating security situation, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) expressed deep concern over the “frightening” scale of the violence. In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Tukur Muhammad-Baba, the ACF urged the Federal Government to take decisive action.
“ACF reiterates its long-standing stance that every new such experience is one too many. Clearly, the people are in great pain, with their situation compounded by existential economic challenges. The killing spree on the Plateau must be stopped immediately, and peace must return to the State,” the statement read.
