The Abia State Government, took decisive action on Tuesday, demolishing a building in Osisioma Local Government Area that had been used as a hideout by kidnappers.

In a stern message to landlords, the government warned against renting properties to tenants without conducting thorough background checks.

Speaking to journalists in Umuahia, Prince Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information, expressed concern over the growing tendency of landlords prioritizing rent collection over vetting the identities and activities of potential tenants.

He emphasized the critical need for property owners to take responsibility for ensuring their buildings are not used for illegal purposes.

“Landlords must conduct proper due diligence before leasing their properties,” Kanu stated.

“It is crucial to maintain accurate records of tenants and ensure your property is not being exploited for criminal activities,” Kanu continued.

The commissioner also issued a stark warning: “The state government will not hesitate to demolish any house used for kidnapping,” urging residents to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities to the authorities.

The demolition follows a successful police operation in which six suspected kidnappers were neutralized, four victims were rescued, and weapons— including two AK-47 rifles, six magazines, and 32 rounds of live ammunition, were seized.

Governor Alex Otti, in response to the operation, reaffirmed his administration’s firm stance against criminal hideouts.

He ordered the complete demolition of the building in Osokwa and vowed to pursue legal action against its owner.

“Any landlord who allows criminals to use their property is as guilty as the criminals themselves,” Governor Otti asserted.

In a further effort to bolster community vigilance, the governor directed the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to collaborate with the local traditional ruler to ensure that residents remain alert and report any suspicious individuals.
