The Rivers State House of Assembly has thrown its support behind President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state, citing the prolonged political crisis that has disrupted governance for over a year.

In a statement issued by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, the Assembly placed blame on the suspended governor, Siminalayi Fubara, accusing him of “despotic and tyrannical actions.” The Speaker listed Fubara’s alleged serial disobedience of court rulings, failure to uphold his oath of office, and unconstitutional obstruction of the legislative arm as key factors that triggered the crisis.

“The Governor’s despotic and tyrannical actions, as confirmed by the courts, have unconstitutionally hindered the Rivers State House of Assembly from functioning, underlies the situation,” Amaewhule said.

Describing the President’s move as being in the “best interest of the country,” he urged residents to remain calm as the Sole Administrator takes over.

“We assure you all, our constituents, that we would abide by this declaration even though it is not what we prayed for,” the statement read.

“Mr. President has acted in the best interest of the country, therefore, we call on you all to remain calm as the Sole Administrator appointed by the President assumes his duty in the best interest of our state and nation.”

Assembly Pledges Support for Sole Administrator

Amaewhule reassured constituents that the Assembly would cooperate with the Sole Administrator to restore stability and effective governance in Rivers State.

“The Rivers State House of Assembly pledges its full support to the Sole Administrator and will provide any assistance required to ensure the restoration of stability and effective governance in our dear state,” he added.

The declaration of a state of emergency marks a significant turning point in Rivers State’s prolonged political turmoil.
