Nine people lost their lives, while three others sustained injuries in a fatal crash along the Ayetoro axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in the early hours of Monday.
The Ogun State Sector of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Abeokuta by the Sector’s Chief Route Commander and Public Education Officer, Florence Okpe.
“A total of 13 people were involved, comprising 10 male adults and three female adults. Nine fatalities were recorded—six males and three females—while three others sustained injuries. Two vehicles were involved: a Toyota Hiace bus (registration number UYY 165 ZY) and a truck (DKA 244 XC),” Okpe stated.
She attributed the crash to excessive speed and fatigue, which caused the driver to lose control and crash into a stationary truck.
The injured victims were taken to Famobis Hospital in Mowe, while the deceased were deposited at Idera morgue in Sagamu.
Reacting to the incident, the FRSC Sector Commander expressed concern over reckless driving, particularly the failure to observe speed limits and the mandatory 15-minute rest after every four-hour journey.
He extended his condolences to the families of the victims and advised them to visit the Mowe Unit Command for further information regarding the crash.
