Luca Zidane, son of France’s World Cup legend Zinedine Zidane, has formally switched his international allegiance from France to Algeria.
The 27-year-old goalkeeper, born just outside Marseille, represented France at youth level but has now been cleared by FIFA to feature for Algeria. His switch could see him line up for the Desert Foxes at the 2026 World Cup in North America, with the team on course to secure qualification in their upcoming clash against Somalia.
Zidane, the second of four brothers who all came through the Real Madrid academy, currently plays for Spanish second-tier side Granada. He previously made two senior appearances for Real Madrid, gained La Liga experience with Rayo Vallecano, and later joined Eibar in 2022 before signing for Granada in 2024.
His eligibility to represent Algeria stems from his paternal grandparents, who hailed from the Kabylie region of the North African country.
Zinedine Zidane, regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, famously scored twice in France’s 1998 World Cup final triumph over Brazil and captained Les Bleus to the 2006 final, where he was sent off in his last professional match against Italy.
