Thousands of migrants crossed overnight from Morocco into Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta, according to a police source, in one of the latest large-scale movements across the border.
The source said a steady flow of migrants continued throughout the night and into Friday morning, making it impossible for authorities to determine the total number of arrivals.
“There was a steady stream of people all night long,” the source said, adding that although the pace of arrivals slowed compared to daytime, migrants “continued to arrive overnight and are still arriving” on Friday morning.
The police source also confirmed that at least 18 people died while attempting to reach the Spanish enclave during the crossing.
Spanish and Moroccan authorities are expected to provide further details as efforts continue to respond to the influx and assess the humanitarian situation.
